The hilarity is all in the language, which by some miracle of translation flows directly into English, rattling with ecclesiastical echoes. This an ancient book, mandatory at Dutch High-schools.

Many of the conversations Frits has are superficial and meaningless. Reve, in this novel, is very good at describing the mundanities of life. We don’t have any information about how he spent the war years but we do know that, instead of picking up his studies where he’d been forced to suspend them and looking for a new way of life, he is living with his parents and has an undemanding and uninteresting office job.

It is a very funny book, in a dark and unsettling kind of way.

Though the war itself is hardly mentioned, the story gives, by describing an individual’s experiences, a detailed description of contemporary post-war society which was marked by fear, boredom and loneliness.
The War is the elephant in the room, conspicuous by its very absence. Until a quarter to four he remained seated on the bed shivering and leading through a book.
