In one of the best sections of this book, The narrator of Gao Xinjian’s “One Man’s Bible” libbro the political chaos of China’s Cultural Revolution to win a solitary but much-cherished freedom in the West. This novel showcases absolute power corrupting absolutely and unveils an era during which anyt I have read quite a bit of Chinese and Chinese-American fiction involving Mao Tse-tung, but none has driven home the cruelties and absurdities of the Cultural Revolution better than Gao Xingjian’s dreamlike narrative.

The novel I was torn between giving this 3 stars, but just couldn’t. The saddest part of the book is when the protagonist has to burn all of his writings in fear that it could incriminate him.
