As her only escape she went out for horseback rides on the moors.
Gothic goodness, even if a bit predictable. Of course the romantic kirkalnd is inevitable, the whirlwind marriage Ill advised, and the antagonists are all but wearing name tags.

She chose to use various names because of the differences in subject matter between her books; the best-known, apart from Plaidy, are Victoria Holt 56 million and Philippa Carr 3 million.
I used to devour Holt, and still have several in storage. They marry without the knowledge of the groom’s family and friends. Within days her husband has committed suicide, so everyone says, she does not believe it is true, and her dog has also gone missing.
As usual kidkland sucks the reader into a fully-fleshed world with excitement, danger, and minute character analysis.
Honestly I don’t care whether I have figured out who the culprit is in these novels or not. This behavior is alleged to be due to the fact that Catherine and Gabriel married after knowing each other for so littl This is one of Holt’s better stories.
Revelw was overdone, in my opinion. And leaking clues via an elderly woman with dementia making stories in tapestries was downright brilliant. She longs to have back the gay life she’d had in school and had convinced herself that things were better at home. Refresh and try again.
Pure pleasure in reading this Like romances, it has the familiar patterns. The atmosphere that is created, the vividly real characters, the angst – all served up in engaging st 3. Anyway, good atmospheric descriptions of the manor house, revdls abbey, mysterious tunnels, Yorkshire Jane Eyre-ish desolation and the elements.

The characters are, of course, flat, and the main motive of the story is to change how the reader feels about them all. As gothic romances go, this has it all, including castles, crumbling abbeys, and mysterious ghost-like monks.
I haven’t read this since I was a tween, and I had forgotten how good it actually is. But what would these books be without a heroine in peril, right?
Of the one ‘bad’ decision she made, I wouldn’t call it stupidness, only really bad timing, as it brought her into peril.
Then She discovers she is pregnant and her baby is the heir to the family fortune. I think this was her first novel and it sets the scene for all of the Victoria Holt genre, as in gothic mystery romance. This would be the second written under the Victoria Holt name and I enjoyed it much more than the first.
I never tire of reading her work even though the plot is generally very similar. View all 8 comments. In a way sad. This would have been kirklxnd lot better if it wasn’t so predictable. Read, highlight, and take notes, across web, tablet, and phone.
After 4 years of French Boarding school Catherine returns to her home to her fathers house. When he asked her to marry him, she ignored the warning signs and said yes.

She wrote over hundred novels during her writing career. Lonely young woman finds herself in a strange situation where her life is under threat from a mystery person. I met Gabriel and Friday on the same day, and, strangely enough I lost them together; so that thereafter, I was never able to think of one without the other. His family, his father, his older sister and her son- the alternate heir to the Revels, a half daft aunt with prophetic visions, an arrogant cousin- Simon, do not wholly welcome her, and there is more to explain in Gabriel’s sudden fears and sullen evasions and, a week later, his “”suicide — exactly like the others””.
She did not know then of the terrible secrets imprisoned behind its massive walls. Fun dive back into my teenage reading habits with this classic Victoria Holt.
