The consequences are as harsh as the world they belong to, and death – though shocking – is an easily cwidrer thing.
Music seems to be a metaphor for writing, or for expression and discovery, as it is in many of Jones’s books. For some initially unknown reason, this northern family is traveling through the South during the novel. They have three children, and the whole family participates in the musical performances that they put on in town after town as they travel round Dalemark in a small brightly painted cart.

It is a farce with a large cast of characters, featuring government, police, and army bureaucracies; sex, politics, and news. Moril and his brother and sister, driven both by suspicions that their mother’s new beau had something to do with the murder, and a lack of acrt for a bourgeois lifestyle, take the cart and strike out on their own, agreeing to take caft young man who had been their family’s passenger to his destination in the North. I liked how the storytelling and musical aesthetic was very Celtic, cwudder Welsh the “branches” of the Adon’s tale was a fun allusion to the branches of the Mabinogi.
Needless to say, it didn’t take me long to guess that this was a series aimed at older readers than Chrestomanci was. However, “Cart and Cwidder” is the first book in the Dalemark quartet that follows the more generic pattern of fantasy war in a created world – making it unique in Wynne Jones’s canon of books, but a typical inclusion to the range of fantasy novels.
All four novels interrelate, and cqidder are clarified and at least partly resolved in the final volume, The Crown of Dalemarkwhich takes place partly in the timeframe of this novel and partly in Dalemark’s present time.

The Dalemark Quartet 4 books. There, Jones and her two younger sisters Isobel later Professor Isobel Armstrong, the literary critic and Ursula later an actress and a children’s writer spent a childhood left chiefly to their own devices.
I wasn’t sure I liked this all tha tmuch, right up until the last third. I have read this book many times since childhood! Page 1 of 1 Start over Page 1 of 1. The “quartet” of voices – the travelling singer Moril in this book, the sailor’s apprentice Mitt in the second, the weaver Cennoreth in the third, and the time travelling teen Maewen in the last – are neatly balanced. Cart and Cwidder marks a satisfying change in DWJ’s approach to fantasy fiction.
I did like the darkeness – the very serious feeling of danger that this story brough with it, making it clear that the important characters weren’t safe.
Inheriting the largest, oldest cwidder in the cart, Moril soon learns that it contains immense power, and with hostile forces closing in around them and Kialan’s hidden identity revealed, Moril must learn to use this power in order to save him and the north.
Diana Wynn Jones has a rare and potent gift.
