Jul 27, Alan D. In the form of a memoir by a latter-day Candide named Hippolyte, The Benefactor leads us on a kind of psychic Grand Bneefactor, in which Hippolyte’s violently imaginative dream life becomes indistinguishable from his surprising experiences in the ‘real world.
If there were no speaking or writing, there would be no truth about anything. The Benefactor is pretty trippy, and that’s nice for a change, and it’s not so trippy as to make the reader feel stupid, which is also nice for a change. Hippolyte’s response is to plan and carry out her murder. It is possible that the two works evolve from the same idea; that idea being, as the title of the essay suggests, that the interpretation of a work of art robs the potential audience of the full range of sensory pleasure to be found therein.
